LONDON Holiday and Tourism Information for the
Athletics Events - 2012 Olympic
|
|
ATHLETICS Athletics became a
key component of the Olympic movement when it was included in
the first modern Games in 1896. Women were first permitted
particpation in track and field events in 1928.
In the 2012 London Games, some 2,000 athletes, ranging from
runners to high jumpers and pole vaulters, will vy for 47 gold
medals. The venue will be the new 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium
at Stratford, Newham, in east London (August 3 to August
12).
Mr Lamine Diack, President of the International Association of
Athletics Federations (IAAF), said of the Stadium: "The
imaginative design to construct a permanent 25,000 seat
sporting facility allowing for a dismountable top section,
which increases the capacity to 80,000 during the Games, fits
the legacy aspirations for both the facility and athletics."
