SAILING
Dorset’s famous
Jurassic coast will form the backdrop for the 2012 Olympic
sailing competitions where 10 gold medals will be contested by
380 athletes between (July 28 and August 11) after the world-class Weymouth
and Portland National Sailing Academy was chosen to host the
events.
Sailing became an Olympic sport in Paris in 1900. Weymouth Bay
and Portland Harbour are considered to be the finest sailing
waters in the UK and now have new purpose-built, on-shore
facilities. The Academy was opened by Her Royal Highness The
Princess Anne in 2005.
