WEIGHTLIFTING Britain has high
hopes in the weightlifting section of the 2012 Olympics to be
staged at the ExCel International Exhibition Centre in London.
English schoolgirl Zoe Smith, aged 14, plans to be among the
medal winners after breaking 98 weightlifting records in her
meteoric rise to the top of her sport. Only 5ft 2 ins tall,
she has already lifted three times her own body weight.
The competition - between (July 28 and August 8) -
involves 170 men and 90 women fighting over 15 gold medals.
The sport first became an individual Olympic sport in 1924 in
Paris. The first events for women were held at Sydney 2000.
